Linux User Group The IC Linux User Group is to help people use the Linux operating system, to educate members of College about how Linux could help them, and to organize interesting events. For those that don't know, Linux is an operating system for PCs and other computer systems, closely resembling Unix, and with around 10 million users worldwide. It includes a vast array of software, including a Web server, graphical user interface, image manipulation, document processing, C / C++, and much more. Anyone can use, copy or change the software. If you're an experienced Linux user, you can join the LUG to help out other users who may be less knowledgeable, and to get involved in events. If you've been thinking about trying Linux, the LUG can help you install it and answer any questions you may have. The society was founded last year. Our first major event was the Linux Symposium, in the Easter term, in which several speakers gave talks about what Linux is, and how it could be useful, both as a desktop operating system, and as a cheap way to do large amounts of scientific calculations. There were also live demonstrations of how to install Linux, and a cluster of workstations working in parallel. In the summer term we held an installfest, when people brought along their PCs and we installed Linux for them. It is possible to 'dual-boot' a PC with both Windows and Linux. We hope to hold more such events in the future, as well as our regular weekly meetings. We have also contributed articles to Felix (the student newspaper) about our events, to help raise awareness. There is the possibility of collaboratively developing new free software in the future. Our meetings are every Friday, at 13:00, in the upper lounge of Southside Bar.
